When will Obsession come to streaming and home video?
Obsession, Curry Barker’s low-budget horror debut, has become a surprising box-office hit. The film follows a young man who uses a wish-granting trinket to make a co-worker fall in love with him, only for the wish to go horribly wrong. Made for $750,000, it opened to $17.2 million and then rose to $23.9 million in its second weekend over Memorial Day.
Early chatter suggested a digital debut as soon as June 2, which would have left less than two weeks for an exclusive theatrical run. After the second-weekend surge, Blumhouse head Jason Blum said the film’s theatrical window and streaming debut are “a big topic of conversation,” adding that he’s “a big believer in a long, consistent theatrical window.” Forbes has reported the film is closing in on $100 million and could reach as much as $200 million.
If Obsession follows the path of a similar breakout horror, which went to digital about a month after its theatrical release, a mid-June digital rental and purchase window is possible.
