We’ve lived in a van and traveled the world for seven years
Two years into our marriage we sold most of our belongings on Facebook Marketplace, bought a van, and set out to explore beyond our doorstep. We committed to one year to justify converting the van into a home on wheels. At the time we were self-employed contractors working fully remote: Chris designed websites and I was a contracted event planner for a company 3,000 miles from our home in Seattle.
Our jobs were only limited by WiFi, which in 2018 was already widespread across the U.S., so we hit the road. That one year turned into a seven-and-a-half-year adventure. We drove through all of the U.S. (including Alaska), traveled much of Canada, and built a sustainable life and business on the move.
Sharing stories on YouTube and Instagram shifted our work toward storytelling. After visiting all 50 states we loaded our 1988 Land Cruiser camper and headed for the Pan-American Highway, nervous about working and living internationally but ready to try. A week in Baja California Sur taught us to travel slower.
