A new look at the feature-length anime Sekiro: No Defeat debuted at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, trading a Studio Ghibli-like calm for sudden, graphic decapitations. The trailer aims to capture the 2019 game's martial-arts violence and shows glimpses of Wolf fighting Genichiro Ashina, Gyoubu Oniwa, and the Senpou Temple monks.

Director Kenichi Kutsuna says the film drew on Mamoru Oshii's work—especially Patlabor 2—and Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke. He directs the project at studio Qzil.la, with Shunsuke Fukui assisting, Takahiro Kishida designing characters and Shuta Hasunuma composing.

Set in a fractured Japan, the story centers on Ashina, where two decades after Sword Saint Isshin Ashina's coup a new threat from the Interior Ministry pushes Genichiro toward forbidden powers. The only hope rests with a kidnapped boy, the Divine Heir, and his silent protector, the shinobi known as Sekiro.
