Zack Snyder's Watchmen: a visually stunning flop turned cult favorite
Zack Snyder is known for striking visuals, meticulous montages and memorable soundtracks, all of which converge in his 2009 adaptation of Watchmen. The ambitious film, based on Alan Moore’s graphic novel, failed to find its audience at first but has since been reassessed and embraced by many viewers.
Fans can now watch the movie for free on HBO Max. The story unfolds in an alternate America where Vietnam was won and Nixon served three terms. The Watchmen once protected the world, aided by Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup), whose near-omnipotence gradually erodes his empathy for humanity.
At the other extreme, The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) uses his power to commit violence and assault, underlining the film’s dark take on vigilante justice and hero worship. Snyder’s adaptation preserves the graphic novel’s central question — "Who watches the Watchmen?" — and follows its plot closely until the finale.
