Once one of Hollywood's brightest stars, Johnny Depp's acting career slipped to the fringes over the last decade. His last high-profile role was the title character in 2018's Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and he was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen in the 2022 sequel.

The very public Depp vs. Heard legal proceedings have coincided with a steep decline in high-profile castings. He has continued to work: Waiting for the Barbarians (2019), Jeanne du Barry (2023), and an animated children's franchise called Puffins. Between 2020 and 2024 he voiced a Puffins character based on his likeness almost 100 times, a run that culminated in the feature Johnny Puff: Secret Mission.

For that role he even created a pseudo-language, a reminder that his method approach remains intact even if it's been underused. That underused energy may find a broader audience in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, due November 13, 2026.
