Steam Machine Pre-Orders Are Being Resold at Steep Prices — Kotaku

Valve implemented several measures to limit scalping of the Steam Machine, including requiring an active Steam account in good standing and using a randomized lottery system for registration to receive the opportunity to pre-order. Emails have been going out to successful registrants, and the first shipments are going out today.

Despite those controls, pre-orders are appearing on eBay at markedly inflated prices. The scale isn’t comparable to the problems that followed the Steam Controller launch, but a significant number of sold pre-orders are listed at hefty markups. Examples include a 2TB Steam Machine without a controller listed as sold for $2,899—more than double its $1,349 base price—and live listings for the 512GB version with controller (list price $1,128) asking as much as $3,200.

The average selling price for the 512GB model has been about $1,500, with a few reaching $2,000; 2TB machines have resold less frequently but have reached $2,500 and above.
