Zack Snyder to reimagine Escape from New York
The Hollywood Reporter says Zack Snyder is attached to write and direct a reimagining of John Carpenter's Escape from New York. Two decades after remaking George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead, Snyder is taking on another seminal director's work. Unlike Snyder's recent straight-to-streaming films Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, the new Escape from New York is intended for a wide theatrical release.
The project is in early stages and "is being put together and will be taken out to market in the coming weeks," The Hollywood Reporter says. John Carpenter will reportedly serve as an executive producer, and there have been previous remake attempts dating back to 2015.
Carpenter's original is a 1981 dystopian action film set in 1997, imagining a United States so overwhelmed by crime that Manhattan has been converted into a maximum-security prison.
