Tom Holland on shooting The Odyssey entirely in IMAX
Tom Holland has built a varied film career, from more than a decade as Spider-Man to work with directors including Ron Howard and James Gray. He turned 30 a few days ago and this summer joins Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey as Telemachus, son of Odysseus (Matt Damon).
On the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast, Holland described the practical challenges of making the first-ever feature film shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras. The camera felt enormous and was encased in a sound‑dampening shell designed by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, nicknamed "The Blimp." When the camera was sealed you couldn’t hear anything; when it was handheld it was very loud, which made focusing difficult.
Because IMAX 70mm holds only about three minutes of footage, long scenes meant stopping to reload the camera.
