Google is adding an AI image verification feature to the Gemini app that lets users upload images and ask whether they were created or edited using Google AI. Gemini checks for the SynthID digital watermark and uses its own reasoning to give more context about the content.

SynthID, introduced in 2023, embeds imperceptible signals into AI-generated content. More than 20 billion pieces have been watermarked, and the SynthID Detector has been tested with journalists and media professionals. To use the feature, upload an image to Gemini and ask questions such as "Was this created with Google AI?" or "Is this AI-generated?" Google will expand SynthID verification to video and audio, bring the capability to more surfaces including Search, and work toward supporting C2PA content credentials so users can check original sources for content created outside Google’s ecosystem.
