Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg's return to science fiction, opened in theaters this weekend and immediately set a new career milestone for the director. Per Box Office Mojo, the film grossed $44 million domestically and $48 million internationally on its opening weekend.

That performance marks Spielberg's best opening for an original feature and the highest opening for an Amblin Entertainment production not based on pre-existing IP. While some of his sequels have opened to larger totals—Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull made $101 million in its 2008 debut—Spielberg's all-time top earner remains 1993's Jurassic Park, which has surpassed $1 billion after re-releases.

The following paragraph contains spoilers for Disclosure Day. The film is neither a sequel nor a reboot of Spielberg's earlier alien stories: although it touches on the idea of aliens among us, it has no direct relation to those previous films.
