Spider-Man: Brand New Day hides its villain — a lesson for Avengers: Doomsday
For a while Marvel repeatedly undercut its own surprises by revealing major beats in pre-release trailers and marketing. Brave New World's third-act Red Hulk tussle and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness exposing a Captain Carter-led alternate-universe lineup showed the problem, and No Way Home's trailers assembled returning villains early; Spidey's first MCU appearance was also unveiled in a late Captain America: Civil War trailer.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes a different tack. This is a street-level affair, brimming with confidence, deploying fan service such as The Punisher with care instead of clumsy crossovers, and its biggest success is how little we actually know about it: vague plots remain, and it’s unclear how Peter Parker's spider-centric transformation, Bruce Banner, The Hand and Sadie Sink's mystery character will blend together.
