Sonic actor unsure what's next for game series after movie boom
Roger Craig Smith says the movies have sent the blue hedgehog's popularity into "a whole other stratosphere." Mainline Sonic games have been oddly quiet this decade, with Sonic Frontiers and a stream of remakes, remasters and spin-offs keeping the franchise alive.
The film series, which began in 2020 and is approaching its third sequel in 2027, has been a major factor—Sonic 3 is only the second video game movie to be Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, after Werewolves Within. Smith joined the series with 2010's Sonic Colors, although his voice debut came at the UK's Alton Towers theme park.
Colleen O'Shaughnessey has reprised Tails for the films, but Smith has mainly voiced Sonic in the games and has made cameo appearances in Wreck It Ralph, OK K.O., and as Sonic in the Sonic Boom TV show. On the future of the game franchise, Smith said, "I don't know where it goes from here," noting that voice actors are often the last to learn about new projects.
