Larry Houston, who directed all 76 episodes of the 1990s X‑Men: The Animated Series and is an executive producer on X‑Men '97, says the creators simply didn't know Cable's backstory when the cartoon began. "Back then, the only thing we knew about Cable was that he had a son named Tyler," he says.

Eric Lewald, a showrunner on the original series and an executive producer on '97, says the character was used sparingly to signal big events for the core team and viewers. "We just used him briefly," he says. "We didn't really focus on him the way that people that love Cable are used to in the comic books.

We used him to get the core team to react to certain problems, like Slave Island.
