Shilton: Leaving the City Ground would be a 'wrench' but 'sometimes a necessity'
Nottingham Forest have played at the City Ground since 1898, but long‑promised renovation work — including a facelift for the Main Stand, named after Peter Taylor — has been slow to materialise. While ambitious Trentside plans have been mooted and contractors such as Mace have been linked with the project, delays and red tape have left the club looking at all options, including the prospect of relocation.
Peter Shilton, who won league and European honours at the City Ground, said leaving would be “a wrench” for older supporters who cherish the memories there. He also recognised the pull of modern demands: newer generations seek greater comfort and clubs need larger matchday revenues to compete with the Premier League’s richest sides.
Shilton argued that ambition is essential if Forest are to keep pace, noting that improvements have been stalled by technicalities and that sometimes expansion becomes a necessity.
