New details from the Los Angeles Medical Examiner's report say James Handy died from a stab wound to the torso, with neck compression cited as an additional factor. The National Institutes of Health notes that neck compressions are often caused by age-related wear and tear in the nerves of the neck when they’re squeezed or put under abnormal pressure.

On June 3, Handy was attacked by 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, who stabbed him to death outside the actor's Tarzana, Los Angeles, home. Handy, 81, suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest and was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The California Post reported authorities responded after a caller said, 'I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.' Shortly after, Michael — the son of Handy’s partner of 30 years, Wendy Gledhill — allegedly waved down officers and told them he was the one they were looking for, according to a news release from the LAPD.

He was arrested and charged with one count of murder; if convicted, he faces up to 26 years in prison.
