Bowen Yang’s SNL Exit Shows How the Show Keeps Reinventing Itself
Bowen Yang’s departure from Saturday Night Live could have been another routine cast shakeup, but the circumstances around it highlighted why the show endures. After seven seasons he had been prepared to leave following Season 50, believing SNL was “in a great place” without him.
Then Lorne Michaels called and, with several cast members leaving and new faces arriving, asked Yang to stay for part of Season 51 to help guide the incoming talent—telling him, “I need you.” Michaels’ request underscored the value of institutional memory. Rather than letting an entirely fresh group fend for itself, the producer wanted veterans to provide stability and set an example.
Newcomer Ashley Padilla later thanked Yang for teaching her “how to be at this show, how to behave and how to treat people,” a small set of lessons that help preserve the show’s behind-the-scenes culture.
