Nagelsmann explains how Karl's injury occurred
Lennart Karl (18) has suffered a serious muscle injury while striking a shot on goal and will be ruled out of the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Julian Nagelsmann said the injury did not happen on the very last shot of an extra session after training; it occurred in the middle of a practice match during a relatively simple shot. The 18-year-old right winger knew straight away it was serious, paused for a moment and then the tears flowed.
Nagelsmann said Karl will be out for between four and six weeks, perhaps a little longer, which could see him miss Bayern Munich's first training session on 20 July, the day after the World Cup final.
The timing is especially unfortunate given Bayern midfielder Serge Gnabry suffered a nearly identical injury in mid-April, tearing his adductor while taking a shot on goal rather than in a tackle. Vincent Kompany called it "very unfortunate" and said it happened during a penalty shoot-out.
