Messi makes World Cup history as Argentina beat Austria 2-0
Lionel Messi became the World Cup's all-time leading scorer and added a second goal as Argentina beat Austria 2-0 in a bad-tempered game in Dallas to maintain their winning start to their title defence. He should have broken Miroslav Klose's record after eight minutes but dragged a penalty wide, before opening the scoring in the 38th minute by sweeping home a low cross from Facundo Medina following a dummy from Thiago Almada.
Messi sealed the win with almost the last kick of the game, converting after a scramble in the area. Argentina's defence was largely steady. Lisandro Martinez and Facundo Medina earned 7/10s, with Medina also providing the assist and being subbed late after a booking.
Cristian Romero was forced off with a knock after being caught late at the start of the second half, while Nahuel Molina and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez were given 6/10s; Emiliano made one decent save from a well-struck Marcel Sabitzer free-kick.
