Ridley Scott and Matt Damon's The Martian is one of the most celebrated sci‑fi movies of the 21st century. Two years later Damon returned to the genre for Alexander Payne's 2017 comedy 'Downsizing', which imagined shrinking whole cities as a response to overpopulation.

Damon plays Paul Safranek, who undergoes the irreversible downsizing procedure with his wife Aubrey; she changes her mind at the last minute, leaving Paul to live at one‑twentieth scale. After years of relative obscurity, the film has resurfaced on streaming and is currently available on MGM+, where it ranks as the platform's 10th most popular title while the thriller From holds the top spot.

Critics were divided over 'Downsizing', praising its intriguing premise but faulting the film for shifting from high‑concept sci‑fi to a more conventional dramedy about one man's isolated life. It holds a 47% Rotten Tomatoes score and a 26% audience rating, and grossed $55 million against a $68 million production budget.
