Mbappe brace secures France's 3-1 win over Senegal
France recovered from a slow start to beat Senegal 3-1 in their World Cup opener. Kylian Mbappe scored twice — including a late long-range strike — and became his country's all-time top scorer, while Bradley Barcola added a composed finish. The first half offered few positives for Les Bleus and two clear chances for Senegal: Nicolas Jackson's drive hit the base of the post after Mbappe lost possession, and Ismaila Sarr somehow side-footed a close-range chance over in injury time.
France came to life after the break, with efforts from Desire Doue, Michael Olise and Mbappe testing goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. A VAR review and pitch-side monitor did not lead to a penalty when Sadio Mane appeared to take Mbappe out, but Olise soon set up Mbappe, who slotted home from the angle.
Jackson’s immediate response was ruled out for offside. Adrien Rabiot’s through ball created Barcola’s dinked finish, Ibrahim Mbaye produced a sublime consolation for Senegal, and Mbappe capped the night with a 30-yard looping strike that beat Mendy.
