Maurizio Sarri appointed Atalanta head coach after Lazio exit
Maurizio Sarri is back in the dugout after Atalanta confirmed him as their new head coach following his exit from Lazio. The 67-year-old arrives in Bergamo with more than 800 professional matches and a trophy cabinet that includes a Europa League and a Scudetto.
Sarri’s rise began in the lower tiers of Tuscan football and took him through Empoli to a cult status at Napoli. He then moved to the Premier League with Chelsea, where in his lone season he finished third in the league and won the 2018-19 Europa League final, and later led Juventus to the 2020 Serie A title.
The Percassi and Pagliuca families and the club have welcomed him, citing their belief that he can keep Atalanta on a European trajectory. Taking charge at the Gewiss Stadium means replacing a recent back-three approach, so a tactical reset is expected. Supporters should anticipate Sarri’s rigid 4-3-3 and high-tempo vertical passing—often called "Sarrismo".
