German legend Lothar Matthaus has outlined two clear paths that could see national manager Julian Nagelsmann leave his post early despite a contract running until 2028. Speaking ahead of the 2026 World Cup, Matthaus said Nagelsmann's future depends entirely on performance: a group-stage disaster would trigger an immediate exit, while winning the tournament could prompt a voluntary departure.

Matthaus argued that lifting the World Cup should be the ideal moment to step away. "If he becomes world champion, he should actually quit of his own accord," he said, noting Nagelsmann would be the third youngest world‑champion coach after Alberto Suppici and Mario Zagallo, and that the 38‑year‑old might then want to return to the daily intensity of club football.

Still, Matthaus acknowledged an alternative: Nagelsmann, who took over in 2023 and is the ex‑Bayern Munich boss, may have grown to enjoy the national team environment. "Then again, perhaps he also likes the national team job much too much by now," he added.
