Playing Path of Exile 2 on hardcore difficulty means one death permanently ends your character. Streamer Zizaran lost a hardcore character in a mundane combat encounter, and during a recent interview the game's co-directors revealed the culprit was an accidentally deadly crab.

Co-game director Jonathan Rogers said the team found a crab enemy that can unleash a volley of projectiles if it dies mid-attack, and a bug made them all fall immediately, "like a shotgun blast." Mark Roberts added, "If you're standing on that monster when it dies while it's using that skill you just die instantly," and said that crab has climbed to the third-highest player kill count in the game.

The crab appears commonly in Remnant encounters, where a large group of enemies spawns in a circle and players can easily be right on top of them when they die. Rogers recalled a spider that was "accidentally doing 100 projectiles over 100 milliseconds for a total of 200K damage," and said the crab is one of several small kinks the team needs to iron out.
