Masters of the Universe box office projections
A feature-film reboot of Masters of the Universe, a project in development since 2007, arrives amid high expectations and a crowded summer slate. The adaptation of the 1980s toyline and animated series faces questions about whether nostalgia will carry a 40-year-old property or whether unfamiliar audiences will look elsewhere.
The film’s reported budget sits between $170 million and $200 million, putting it above The Mandalorian’s $166.4 million and Barbie’s $150 million. At the top end it matches Project Hail Mary’s $200 million, though that film benefited from a popular book source and strong word of mouth; Masters of the Universe has a 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes and will need sustained audience support to reach hit territory.
Industry estimates suggest it must gross between $400 million and $500 million to be considered a success. Opening-weekend projections look modest: the film is aiming for $30 million to $35 million and could debut at number three behind Scary Movie ($45–50 million) and Backrooms.
