Man Utd secures 25-acre site for 100,000-seat 'Wembley of the North'
Manchester United has secured the majority of the land needed for a new 100,000-seat stadium after acquiring a 25-acre site near Old Trafford, a major step for Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 'Wembley of the North' project. The club bought the site from Indurent, a Blackstone portfolio company.
It sits about 350 metres north-west of the current ground, between Wharfside Way, Europa Way and John Gilbert Way. Collette Roche, CEO of United’s New Stadium Development, said the location will let the club preserve its heritage, traditions and rituals while moving into the next phase of development, and that securing the right land has been critical to delivering a world-class stadium.
The stadium will anchor a 370-acre regeneration expected to deliver around 15,000 new homes, roughly 48,000 local jobs and contribute more than £7 billion annually to the UK economy.
