I left my NYC law job, moved to Florida, and became a literary agent
Raised in Florida, she moved to Manhattan for law school and spent a decade in Big Law. Though the work felt stable, she realized that becoming a literary agent better matched her editorial instincts and negotiation skills. As a pregnant 31-year-old associate, she initially concluded there was no realistic path to switch careers while staying in New York.
Giving birth to her son in October 2023 shifted priorities. A week before her due date they bought a house near her parents on Florida’s Space Coast, and with her husband working remotely the family could afford a pause from full-time work. The lower cost of living and help from her mother let her focus on caring for their child and writing.
She took a remote publishing internship, then began contacting agencies while pregnant with her second child. A CEO from her preferred agency asked for a call, an in-person meeting with the VP followed, and she was offered a remote agenting role.
