Hungary to Reverse Crypto Trading Rules That Carried Prison Terms
Hungary will decriminalize crypto trading and unwind rules that imposed potential jail terms for certain crypto-to-fiat and crypto-to-crypto transactions, Tisza government spokesperson Anita Köböl said at a Thursday press conference. Köböl called the measures "an unnecessary piece of legislation" that "made practical operation impossible and frightened the market participants," and said the criminal consequences "negatively impacted several hundred thousand people." The restrictions stemmed from a 2025 legislative package that amended the Criminal Code and the Crypto Act.
From July 1, 2025, exchanging crypto could be carried out only with a compliance certificate issued by an authorized crypto asset conversion validation service provider; transactions lacking that certificate were treated as "unauthorised crypto-transactions" and deemed legally ineffective.
