Hugh Jackman's Dark Robin Hood Thriller Opens This Week
Hugh Jackman’s new A24 historical action-thriller, The Death of Robin Hood, opens in theaters on Friday, June 19, 2026 (after Thursday previews). Writer-director Michael Sarnoski, best known for A Quiet Place: Day One, directs the film in which Jackman plays an older, battle-scarred Robin Hood.
Built on a 17th-century ballad, the movie offers a darker, more contemplative take on the legendary archer. After suffering a grave injury, Robin Hood is nursed on his deathbed by Sister Brigid (Jodie Comer) and spends his final days wrestling with regrets, guilt, hope and thoughts of the afterlife.
Critics have praised Jackman’s ruminative performance, and the film carries a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is rated R for strong, bloody violence, with enough brutality to satisfy viewers who enjoyed the blend of wistful imagery and unrelenting barbarity in films like The Northman.
