Fox McCloud’s cameo in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie highlighted how uneven the Star Fox series has been since its 1993 debut. Nintendo released far fewer Fox games than its other big franchises, with longer gaps between launches after 2005. Velan Studios’ Star Fox remake brings the vulpine mercenary back into the spotlight; it’s a muted return after years of silence, but there are signs it could be the start of something better.

The original Star Fox was one of Nintendo’s first experiments in 3D, built with Argonaut’s hardware on the Super Nintendo and reflecting Shigeru Miyamoto’s taste for puppet-style presentation. After cancelling Star Fox 2 in 1995, Nintendo expanded the series with 1997’s Star Fox 64, which added multiplayer, new characters, a tank and a broader story about Dr.

Andross, the betrayal of Pigma and the fate of James McCloud. Star Fox 64 also multiplied routes and planets compared with the original’s simpler structure, and that blend of old and new set the template for many entries to follow.
