Google has announced the new Google Home Speaker, which goes on sale June 25 at $99. The device includes Gemini for Home, offers 360-degree sound and can double as a smart home hub. Its direct rival is Amazon's Echo Dot Max, listed at $100 (currently on sale for $65) and featuring Alexa+.

Both speakers ship with generative AI assistants that move beyond simple command-and-response. Gemini for Home in the Google Home app feels slightly more conversational than Alexa+, delivering more complete answers, handling mid-sentence corrections and reasoning through multi-step questions.

Alexa+ remains a capable assistant, but Google has invested heavily in consumer-facing and generative AI tools. Audio and smart-home capabilities differ. Amazon emphasizes upgraded audio with the Echo Dot Max's dual-speaker design and stronger bass, while Google describes balanced 360-degree audio for podcasts and music.
