Nintendo used its most recent Nintendo Direct to confirm a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 later this year, ending weeks of speculation. The brief reveal answered some big questions about the franchise’s future but offered almost no gameplay detail and did little to reassure a fanbase split over what they want from Zelda next.

Ocarina of Time is a cornerstone of the series. Originally released in 1998, it brought Zelda into 3D and later reached many more players with a 3DS remaster, while Breath of the Wild reimagined the formula with an expansive open world and drew an even larger audience.

Fans are now left guessing whether the remake will be a faithful 1-to-1 recreation or lean toward the open-ended design of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Either choice risks alienating a portion of the audience, so Nintendo faces a narrow path between competing expectations.
