FIFA bans reusable water bottles after last-minute stadium rule change
FIFA has removed a clause that had allowed empty, transparent reusable plastic bottles up to one litre, replacing it with a clear prohibition on bringing reusable water bottles into World Cup stadiums. Fans were notified by email that the previous guidance was voided on June 2, a change that prevents supporters from refilling personal containers at stadium water fountains and has prompted criticism that the move prioritises commercial interests over fan welfare.
The governing body said the ban is a safety measure to prevent risk and injury, noting that outside bottles are already prohibited at several venues and that mitigation measures such as misting stations, hydration stations and cooling tents will be available around stadium footprints.
It also said inside stadium pricing for water bottles will remain consistent with other events. Supporter groups reacted angrily, citing heat and transparency concerns, and the Football Supporters’ Association warned fans had been put last.
