Epic merges UE5 with UEFN to create Unreal Engine 6
Epic is merging Unreal Engine 5 with Unreal Engine for Fortnite (UEFN) to create Unreal Engine 6. Tim Sweeney summed it up as "UE 5 plus UEFN equals UE 6, plus some more cool stuff on the way." The merge is intended to let developers build and ship across every platform and store at the same time, and to bring APIs and code together across Epic’s additions, including MetaHumans.
UEFN—a simplified version of UE5 that lets anyone make levels or complete games for Fortnite—helped drive the redesign. Its emphasis on usability is central to UE6, and Epic plans to combine the two packages to offer the best of both worlds. Gameplay programming in UE6 will shift toward Verse while keeping C++ underneath.
