Hollywood Eyes Reddit for Next Hit After Backrooms' Breakout
Interest in Reddit-sourced material has surged after 20-year-old Kane “Pixels” Parsons’ Backrooms earned more than $240 million at the global box office on a tiny budget.
Assistants at at least one Hollywood agency are combing Reddit and its various subreddits for inspiration, and an agency veteran says they have already identified "a bunch" of subreddits and short stories that could translate into compelling films.
A story first posted on the NoSleep subreddit is being turned into a feature produced by and starring Sydney Sweeney, currently titled I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl. If that film happens and reaches Backrooms-level popularity, a wave of movies pulled from Reddit and YouTube could follow, bringing new, young talent and helping Hollywood reconnect with viewers who have started tuning out big theatrical releases.
Parsons is already talking about a sequel, something A24 is likely very interested in making as soon as possible.
