Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is a rare entry that places Bruce Wayne's personal drama at the center of its story. While films by Christopher Nolan and Matt Reeves often let villains dominate, this animated feature makes the failure of Bruce's relationship with Andrea Beaumont the driving force behind his transformation into Batman.

The plot follows Batman (Kevin Conroy) as he hunts a mysterious new killer, the Phantasm (Stacy Keach), whose murders of mob figures are wrongly attributed to him. Andrea Beaumont (Dana Delaney) returns to Gotham and, through flashbacks, the film shows a younger Bruce falling in love and briefly hopeful about a different life.

That conflict—choosing between crimefighting and a chance at happiness—culminates in a moment at his parents' grave, where he pleads, "I didn't count on being happy." Mask of the Phantasm weaves those flashbacks with the present-day investigation, functioning as a pseudo-origin while giving Batman detective work to do.
