It's Officially the End of an Era for One of This Decade's Greatest Directors
Yorgos Lanthimos, whose recent run includes Poor Things (2023), Kinds of Kindness (2024) and Bugonia (2025), is stepping away from filmmaking for the foreseeable future, possibly indefinitely. His earlier work — The Lobster (2015), The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) and The Favourite (2018) — helped establish him as a distinctive voice; three of those six films were nominated for Best Picture, with Olivia Colman winning Best Actress for The Favourite and Emma Stone earning Best Actress for Poor Things.
Speaking earlier this year about his photography exhibit, Lanthimos described the medium as solitary and meditative: "You can just walk around with a camera, it is a solitary thing, and kind of meditative in a way. You don’t have to have a concept, you don’t have to have an end goal.
You don’t have to find financing." He stopped short of a definitive farewell, adding, "I think I will make more films. But at this point I am saying, 'I don’t know, we will see.' I need to find again the joy in making films.
