We’re past the halfway point of 2026, and if the year is treated as a countdown to The Game Awards’ eligibility cutoff in late November, it feels like a good moment to take stock of how competition is shaping up. The most interesting contest outside the main Game of the Year race may well be Best Independent Game.

That category is hard to predict early: critical and commercial hits are harder to see coming, release dates aren’t shared far in advance, and a low-profile breakout remains possible. Still, a handful of front-runners has emerged. Mina the Hollower is the best-reviewed game of the year to date on Metacritic and has strong goodwill toward its studio, even if sales are modest.

Mewgenics was a Steam sensation and has console versions coming, though Edmund McMillen’s edgy sensibility has provoked some pushback in 2026. Cairn offers a technically rewarding, beautiful mountain-climbing adventure with an emotional core.
