The Xbox brand has swung between highs and lows, and its current position is notably weak. Hardware sales and overall revenue have been in steady decline for months, and Microsoft cut thousands of Xbox jobs, canceled numerous projects and shuttered studios in 2025 before announcing a voluntary buyout program — a first in the company's 51-year history.

Longtime Xbox boss Phil Spencer and president Sarah Bond left in February and were replaced by Asha Sharma and a promoted Matt Booty. Sharma says the brand needs a full "reset": "We're long on gaming, we're long on Xbox, we'll keep investing, but we've got work to go," she told Bloomberg Tech during a livestream.
