LCD emulation preserves iconic Nintendo handhelds and their rivals

BrickEmuPy is a handheld LCD games emulator written in Python with PyQt6. Created by developers Azya52 and Andrei Cherniaev, the project has already preserved more than 60 portable classics and has been highlighted by Time Extension. The collection spans Tamagotchis and Digimon Digivices to Legend of Zelda and Super Mario wrist watches.

The developers also dumped Nintendo's Mini Classics Soccer keychain from 1998, and it appears to be the first Mini Classics game to be dumped for emulation. The author expresses a fondness for janky LCD games and keeps examples of rivals to Nintendo's Game and Watch made by Systema, Tiger and others.

Those odd portables, however crude, are part of the handheld history worth saving. Preserving ROMs helps these devices survive after their physical forms crumble, while keeping the hardware experience remains important as the industry moves toward all-digital.
