John Byrne is revisiting the end of The Dark Phoenix Saga in a new series, X-Men: Elsewhen, which imagines Jean Grey surviving the classic storyline he co-wrote with Chris Claremont. Byrne both wrote and drew the project, setting an alternative future for the team and the wider Marvel Universe.

The story opens with the X-Men returning to Earth with a weakened Jean Grey as they contend with Sentinels and the Savage Land. Preview pages show the Human Torch and the Thing of the Fantastic Four squaring off against a mutant-hunting Sentinel. Series editor Chris Ryall said Byrne’s new adventures remind readers why his earlier work was influential while offering fresh, relevant stories for newer fans.

The book is inked by Byrne and Paul Wills, colored by Lovern Kindzierski and Leonard O’Grady, and lettered by Byrne and Patrick Brosseau. X-Men: Elsewhen is part of Abrams ComicArts’ Marvel Arts line. The first volume went on sale Tuesday, June 23, for $39.99 and has already sold out at retailers like Amazon; a second printing is on the way.
