Working with Nolan made Tom Holland see Marvel movies as a factory
Tom Holland is set to star in two major releases this summer, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. After working with Christopher Nolan, Holland told GQ that Marvel’s approach felt “more like a messy factory and less like the set of a talented auteur director,” and he began asking, “Why are we making this movie?” He persuaded Sony to delay production on the next Spider-Man so he could make Nolan’s Odyssey, and the studio agreed.
Holland said the pause gave Sony time to secure Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton and gave him six months to “develop the script,” and he added, “I truly believe that we’ve made the best version of any Spider-Man movie going.” “So while it was a tough pill to swallow for Sony, I think in hindsight, they’re very grateful that it happened,” he said.
On The Odyssey’s set Holland said he would call Sony to “lay down the law” after watching how prepared Nolan was.
