Windows 10 extended with security updates through October 2027
Microsoft has extended Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 so security patches will continue until October 2027. The company had announced in 2024 that mainstream support would end in October 2025, and the ESU program was originally set to run for a year after that, through October 2026.
Feature updates remain finished for Windows 10, but the ESU program keeps security fixes flowing to protect machines from malware, ransomware, and similar threats. The add-on has been available for $30, or free for some users, and those already enrolled will receive the extra year automatically and, where applicable, without additional charge.
Windows 10 still has a large installed base: the Steam Hardware and Software Survey shows 24% of respondents using Win10 64-bit. Windows 11’s stricter hardware requirements mean it won’t install on some older systems, or owners must rely on external tools such as Rufus to upgrade.
