Why Gabriel took Arsenal’s final penalty, Arteta explains
Arsenal's hopes of European glory ended in a penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at the Puskas Arena, with Gabriel Magalhaes missing the decisive fifth kick and handing the trophy to the French side. Mikel Arteta said Gabriel volunteered for the high-pressure spot-kick.
"He (Gabriel) wanted to take number five honestly. We have prepared and trained for this moment. Normally the penalty takers would be Bukayo [Saka], Martin [Odegaard], Kai [Havertz] for sure," the manager explained, adding that Eberechi Eze has shown consistency in training.
"It's unfortunate not to have the same precision and efficiency that they had and that's the reason that we haven't won." Declan Rice moved to defend his teammates after the game, noting the pain of the miss while urging perspective. "Devastated. Missing a penalty in a Champions League final isn't nice.
