Why Did Mary and Sheila Leave Ghosts?

Premiering on CBS in October 2021, Ghosts is an American sitcom adapted from the 2019 British series. Both shows follow a couple who inherit a haunted house—Sam and Jay in the U.S., Alison and Michael in the U.K.—and the ensemble of spirits who live there. Two beloved supporting characters, Mary Guppy in the British original and Flower in the American remake, were written out of their respective series, prompting questions from fans.

In the British Ghosts, Mary Guppy (Katy Wix) is a 17th-century peasant woman accused of witchcraft and burned alive, who serves as a polite, caring matriarch among the ghosts. She appeared in 24 of 35 episodes before abruptly departing in Season 4, Episode 4, "Gone Gone," when she ascends in a golden spire of light and moves on to the afterlife.

Co-creator Ben Willbond said the team never intended for a character to leave; off-screen, Wix stepped away to focus on other commitments, including roles in Ted Lasso, Big Boys and the TV movie Men Up.
