Anya Taylor-Joy has joined Andy Serkis’ mid-quel The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum as Seren, described as “a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil.” The casting announcement also confirmed Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Jamie Dornan as a replacement Aragorn, and Lee Pace returning as Thranduil.

Seren is a new figure not found in J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings. The film draws largely from a passage in The Fellowship of the Ring in which Gandalf and Aragorn recount their search for Gollum; Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, and Fran Walsh have returned to write for Serkis’ project.

In the book, Aragorn eventually delivers Gollum to the Sindar in Mirkwood, where Gandalf questions him before Gollum escapes and later finds Frodo. To expand that brief episode into a feature, the movie will give the Woodland Realm and its elves a larger role, which helps explain casting a high-profile actor for an original character.
