In the season two finale, Prince Daemon envisions Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne and comes to see her as the "Prince That Was Promised," a belief that pushes her toward seizing power in season three. Emma D'Arcy has said the season traces "a movement towards tyranny," adding that Rhaenyra's arc becomes radicalized by a kind of religious fanaticism.

In George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood, Rhaenyra takes King's Landing while Aemond is away and finds the City Watch mostly loyal to Daemon. Only Queen Helaena remains in the city with Dreamfyre, described in the book as a "broken woman" unable to fight. Rhaenyra and Daemon enter the Red Keep, but when she sits the Iron Throne its melted swords cut her hands and legs and blood drips from her skin—an omen that turns many against her.

Shortages and heavy taxes follow, and public executions and other harsh measures breed rumors of cruelty.
