What We Learned From the First Extended Look at Marvel’s Wolverine
State of Play delivered the first extended look at Marvel’s Wolverine, and the footage makes one thing clear: this is not an open-world or sandbox game. Game director Mike Daly said, “I can say we did not set out to make an open-world game or a sandbox game,” explaining the team aimed for a high-octane, linear single-player adventure built from tightly structured missions across varied locations.
Insomniac has removed the traditional X-Men framework—“the X-Men don’t exist in our game,” creative director Marcus Smith said—and set the story in a world where mutants are not widely known and are being hunted by a cybernetic militia called the Reavers for Bolivar Trask.
Instead of Professor Xavier’s team, the game centers on Team X, a last-stand mutant task force; Logan renews his membership, helps characters like Leech and Morlocks leader Callisto (played by Debra Wilson), and crosses paths with cameos such as Omega Red.
