Gears of War: E-Day is the next mainline entry in the Xbox franchise and not a sequel to Gears 5. The game takes the series back to Emergence Day, showing how the Locust invasion destroys the city of Kalona over three days and how characters like Marcus react to a threat they’ve never seen before.

The Coalition shared details during the Xbox Showcase and in a longer Xbox Wire post. The studio says this is the first Gears game they built without porting forward old assets, moving to Unreal Engine 5 and recreating everything from scratch — characters, enemies, weapons, animation, sound and the world itself.

Even the series’ iconic “Bwwamm” noise was redone for the new game. Gameplay adds include sliding from a sprint, jumping for more verticality, and varied cover types that can force characters nearly prone. E-Day also introduces new weapons, such as a handheld grenade launcher and a Locust-made shotgun that fires acid-like Emulsion.
