What Andy Burnham Means for Crypto in the UK
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stepped down amid waning poll numbers and pressure from inside the Labour Party. During his tenure the government introduced a moratorium on cryptocurrency donations to political campaigns, citing concerns that crypto could become a vector for foreign influence in UK elections, and the UK followed a generally cautious path on crypto regulation.
A frontrunner to succeed him is Andy Burnham, the member of parliament for Makerfield and former Mayor of Greater Manchester, who has spoken optimistically about blockchain’s ability to support economic development. As mayor he framed digital technology as an economic development tool, saying “I’m bought in” and pledging to “make [Manchester] the Web3 powerhouse that we want it to be,” while championing a bottom-up model dubbed “Manchesterism” that prioritises devolution, regional control and public–private partnerships.
