Melanie Burrell prefers the word 'hairpiece' and even named her Glasgow shop Parrucche to be discreet. The stigma around wig wearing is fading: outside of Black and queer communities wigs have broadened from concealment or costume into mainstream fashion, with Statista predicting the global wigs and hair extensions market will reach $13.28bn this year and men’s hair systems also on the rise.

Celebrities have helped normalise the trend, from Sabrina Carpenter's evasive comments about her hair to Cardi B arriving at court in different styles and Odessa A’zion admitting a premiere look was a wig—so I spent a week trying a new piece every day to see how it felt.

On day one I started small with an 18-inch Peonymebeauty topper (£29.91) in 'chocolate brown', which proved slightly darker than my own hair. It felt heavy but secure and delivered instant volume—an easier alternative to a bouncy blow dry. Day two brought the Starlet Style (£295) from Wigs UK: retro glamour that took time to sit right.
